Director, Data Delivery

This position reports to the VP of Enterprise Applications, who owns all development. In 2016, the company began an organizational change, moving from a siloed structure into a flatter organization, consolidating a number of areas. They are now matrix-based, with multiple ‘practices’. This position is a Director level role, and leadership ability is the key.

Indianapolis, IN

Technology:
Given their legacy systems, acquisitions, etc., OA uses a hub and spoke’ approach to retrieving data. They use this concept:
  • Data at rest – How do you model the data stores? What is the quickest way to access the data through the hub & spoke? SQL stored procedures, etc.
  • Data movement – Informatica, ETL
  • Data exposure – Mulesoft for service integration, custom services

One challenge is the lack of data governance in the hub & spoke. When users ask for data, the team determines how to access and deliver it.

Analytics:
Last year, the company hired a VP of Data Strategy to build an analytics team; this data delivery position will interface heavily with the analytics team. Once the data is exposed, the analytics team can then use it. The analytics team handles BI, is rolling out visualization tools, and managing data governance.

Responsibilities:
The data delivery leader’s team is responsible for the data pipeline – how best to access the data through the hub & spoke.
They will manage a team of 7 – 10 on three teams: data modeling, ETL, and MuleSoft. This will include others who are managers; they will be a ‘leader of leaders’.

Tasks:
  • Responsible for the operational levels of agreement
  • Own the delivery of direction; i.e. the execution of operational strategies
  • Work with the enterprise architecture team to develop plans and roadmaps
  • Work with the Analytics team to assure delivery of needed data
  • Assist in selection of tools and business partners
  • Evaluate and improve team performance; recommend trainings and personnel development
  • Ensure that best practices and procedures are defined and followed
  • Manage the delivery staff who will make the actual architecture decisions

Keys to Success:
To be successful, this director will quickly:
  • Build good working relationships with the other IT teams
  • Understand the data that exists, and its power within an organization
  • Identify gaps in processes, and put together roadmaps as needed

Preferred background:
As stated before, this is a “Leader of Leaders”; managerial expertise is the critical factor. Additionally, candidates need:
  • Experience with Agile transformation as it relates to ETL and Data Modeling; data management is a shared service with a lot of demands
  • Proven ability to mature an organization in the data management space
  • Able to lead through change – identify gaps and produce roadmaps
  • Outstanding ability to combine strategy, planning, and execution
  • Deep understanding of data integration
  • Excellent communications and presentation skills
  • Superior management experience and philosophies

Base salary in the mid-upper $100's, plus bonus
Rewards:
The successful candidate will enjoy long-term growth potential in a highly stable, rewarding company.
Competitive salary; bonuses. Potential relocation assistance if needed.

This is a mature, highly established company that, like many, is now going through a transformative effort. This is creating opportunities for visionary leaders to make a significant impact!
